What is Access to Work?

Access to Work provides advice and practical support to disabled people and their employers to help overcome work related obstacles resulting from a disability. Access to Work can also pay a grant towards any extra employment costs resulting from a disability.

Who is eligible for help through Access to Work?

For people with a disability (which is likely to last for 12 months or longer), who are in a job, about to start in a job, or are self- employed, Access to Work can help overcome many obstacles. This applies to any paid job, part-time or full-time, permanent or temporary.

What type of help can be provided through Access to Work?

Examples of where grants can be paid are:

  • To unemployed or employed disabled people needing help at interview through Communicator Support at a job Interview (CSI);
  • Towards the costs of a support worker, which allows the applicant to use the services of a helper, for example: reading to a visually impaired person; communicating with a Deaf person via sign language; providing specialist coaching for a person with learning difficulties or helping a person with care needs;
  • Special aids and equipment to help a disabled person in the work place;
  • Adaptations to premises or to existing equipment;
  • Help with the additional costs of travel to work, or in work for people who are unable to use public transport because of a disability.

How much is the Access to Work grant?

Grants of 100% are paid to unemployed people starting a job; all self-employed people; and people working for an employer, who have been in the job for less than 6 weeks.

Grants of between 80% - 100% for costs exceeding £300 can be made for people who have been in a job for more than 6 weeks - the level of grant will depend on the circumstances and type of help needed. All grants are usually made for a period of 3 years - after which the Access to Work Business Centre will carry out a review.
